Troy Kotsur Appears on Sesame Street Teaching American Sign Language

Academy Award-winning Deaf actor Troy Kotsur recently made an appearance in one episode of the timeless PBS children’s show ‘Sesame Street” teaching American Sign Language. He's the 2nd Deaf person in history to actually win an Oscar, the 1st being his co-star in CODA, Marlee Matlin.

He's on the program to teach two of the Muppets and also the show’s global audience the regularly featured “Word of the Day” in American Sign Language (ASL). He explained to Sesame Street characters Rosita and the Count that he is Deaf and utilizes ASL to interact with others.

What is American Sign Language (ASL)?

This well-recognized form of sign language is used by Deaf people all over North America and in other parts of the planet also, including in Canada. The use of sign language to communicate is called signing. ASL uses both manual or hand-based gestures and also movements with other parts of the body to convey messages.

The Word of the Day is Diversity

The actor explained that it means understanding and also appreciating the differences in how people look, where they are from, and how they communicate with other people.

The Significance of Troy Kotsur’s Appearance on the Show & Teaching ASL for the Deaf Community

Troy Kotsur's guest appearance on Sesame Street is important for combining 3 different languages - American Sign Language, English, and Spanish - as well as repeating several words. This aspect of the signing segment improves viewers' ability to sign these terms and even shows the diversity of sign language use.

Seeing a Deaf actor doing American Sign Language on Sesame Street, which has a worldwide viewership, can help to fill the void in Deaf representation in the media.

Small Steps toward Improved Awareness and Inclusivity

These tiny changes in the global media are powerful simply because they get individuals talking. Hearing people become more aware of the Deaf, are more exposed to Deaf communities, and begin to recognize a few of the accessibility issues that Deaf individuals experience every single day.
